History of France

Being roughly hexagonal in shape, France is country in western Europe. For over a thousand years, it has existed as a country, and it has managed to be among those countries with some of the most significant events in European history. The Atlantic Ocean borders it to the west, Belgium and Luxembourg to the northeast, Belgium and Luxembourg to the northeast, Germany and Switzerland to the east, southwest by Spain and Andorra, the Mediterranean to the south, Italy to the southeast, and the English Channel to the north. The top leader of the government is the president.

 

 

Historical Summary of France

 

 

In 987, Hugh Capet becomes the King of West Francia, and the country emerged from the more considerable Carolingian empire fragmentation. This kingdom became powerful and expanded its territory becoming known as France. Early, they experienced war with English monarchs over land which went for hundred years and later they fought with Habsburgs after the latter appeared to surround France and inherited Spain. After the reformation of between a twisting combination of Protestant and Catholic, the country experienced religion wars as they were closely associated with the Avignon Papacy. With the reign of Louis XIV (1642-1715), French royal power reached its peak and the French culture dominated Europe.

 

After Louis XIV, the Royal power collapsed quickly, and in 1789, France experienced the French revolution which leads to the overthrowing of Louis XVI. France now found itself exploring its world-changing events and fighting wars across Europe. Soon, the French Revolution was usurped by general Napoleon who lead to the first military to dominate Europe, but eventually, they were defeated.

 

Later in the nineteenth century, the monarchy was restored but was challenged by instability and a second empire and republic followed. In 1914 and 1940, the country experienced two German invasions which resulted in the return of democratic republic after liberation. Currently, France is in its 5th republic, established during upheavals in society in 1959.
